Looking at their negotiation in the process of identity construction, several moral messages can be derived: it is not easy to challenge the deeply rooted traditional discriminating gender construct on one’s own. At this point, the two novels differ especially in portraying how each female character negotiates with the social expectations. ![]() In order to pursue their happiness and satisfaction, both Emma and Edna challenge the gender boundaries in their contemporary. Emma is depicted by Flaubert as a morally corrupted woman meanwhile Chopin portrays Edna as rebellious woman. It is found that both novel present comparable gender portrayals – women at that time are mostly bound to domestic sphere and hardly have freedom in living their lives. ![]() The analysis is conducted by comparing the portrayals of the female characters in Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Chopin’s The Awakening. ![]() This study demonstrates the connection between women social condition in 19th century France and America and the construction of women identity.
